The Vice President of China, Han Zheng, will visit Lisbon between 7 and 10 May, after representing Beijing at the coronation ceremony of King Charles III in the United Kingdom, an official government source confirmed to Lusa on Tuesday.
The news of Han Zheng’s visit to Lisbon was advanced by the weekly newspaper Expresso. Contacted today by Lusa, the Portuguese executive confirmed the visit of the Chinese high representative, but without giving details about the reasons for the trip and the respective agenda.
Before visiting Portugal, Han Zheng is expected in London to attend the coronation of Charles III, according to British sources cited by the digital newspaper Politico and the daily The Telegraph.
HAN ZHENG WAS ALREADY IN THE GOVERNMENT BEFORE BECOMING VICE-PRESIDENT
Recently appointed by Chinese President Xi Jinping as his vice president, Han was already in the government and in charge of the ruling party’s Macau and Hong Kong affairs in 2019, when demonstrations against civil rights limitations were heavily repressed by authorities in the former British colony, cooling relations between London and Beijing.
It was the predecessor vice president, Wang Qishan, who represented Xi Jinping at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last September.
