The University of São José (USJ) in Macau has signed an agreement to create a joint laboratory for applied neuroscience at the Catholic University of Porto, in Portugal.

The memorandum of understanding with USJ foresees the creation of “a sister laboratory” at the Catholic University of Porto of which the university’s new laboratory in Macau will be a cofounder, a researcher explained to Lusa.

USJ will transfer “knowledge and technology” developed by researchers in Macau to the future laboratory at the Catholic University of Porto, which has “more critical mass,” said the director of the USJ laboratory.

The two universities are also considering creating a post-graduate course in Neuromarketing, “an area that does not have many academic courses open yet, but that has created a lot of interest,” said Alexandre Lobo.

The potential for the use of neuroscience in the area of marketing was one of the motivations that led the researcher to move from Angola to the Chinese special administrative region in 2017.

The USJ has also signed an agreement with Portuguese start-up VirtuLeap, which works in the area of virtual reality, and will “sponsor some research by providing equipment,” said Lobo, during the lab’s inauguration ceremony.

The academic told Lusa that the researchers linked to USJ’s applied neuroscience laboratory will “soon” go to the company’s headquarters in Lisbon to receive training on VirtuLeap’s virtual reality platform.

The start-up’s equipment, which Lobo described as “very dynamic”, will allow the new laboratory to “expand research to other areas, such as education and psychology”.

USJ researchers are already analyzing the stress caused to young people by classes in traditional Chinese schools in Macau, known for prioritizing memorization and exam results.

The technology could also be used to analyze the results of different types of Chinese language classes for foreigners, as well as to generate tools to deal with lack of concentration, namely to help children and young people with attention deficit or hyperactivity.
