The Macau Gaming Company and the Camões Institute will on Wednesday renew their partnership in the area of promotion and teaching of the Portuguese language within China, announced the consulate-general of Portugal in Macau.

Through a fund created by the Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), which will be renewed for another four years, the gaming concessionaire, founded by casino magnate Stanley Ho (1921-2020), “thus reinforces its contribution to the promotion of Portuguese as an international language in the People’s Republic of China,” the consulate wrote in a statement.
With the first protocol signed in 2019, the note noted, the local gaming operator “became a pioneer company in this region of the world of the status program of Empresa Promotora da Língua Portuguesa.”

By funding “a project to promote and teach Portuguese as a foreign language (PLE) in Beijing, managed by IPOR [Portuguese Institute of the East], as the entity that represents Camões I.P. in this region,” SJM became the “first company to hold this status in Asia,” it added.

Also according to the note, IPOR’s teaching post in Beijing began in May 2020, with short PLE courses, in online format, having promoted “32 training actions of general nature, six preparation courses for CAPLE [Assessment Center for Portuguese as a Foreign Language] exams in collaboration with Maxdo College of Beijing Normal University and taught five personalized tutorials”.
