BYD Company (BYDDF, Financial) surpassed Tesla (TSLA, Financial) in monthly electric vehicle registrations in Europe for the first time, marking a potential shift in the region’s competitive EV landscape, according to April data from Jato Dynamics.
The Chinese automaker registered 7,231 vehicles across European markets last month, up 169% from a year ago. The figure narrowly outpaced Tesla’s estimated April total, which dropped 49% year-over-year as the U.S. brand grappled with a Model Y production shift and mounting criticism tied to CEO Elon Musk’s political involvement in Europe.
While the difference in volumes was marginal, analysts say the implications could be far-reaching. “This is a watershed moment for Europe’s car market,” Jato analyst Felipe Munoz said.
The report follows BYD’s launch of the Dolphin Surf in Europe earlier this week. The new low-cost EV enters the market as the company’s tenth model available in the region. Promotional pricing starts at €19,990, with standard models ranging from €22,950 to €24,990, offering between 322 to 507 kilometers of range.
