Macau residents last year invested MOP1.2 trillion (US$150 billion) in securities from outside the special administrative region, with the amount having grown by 14.3 per cent from the end of 2023.
Macau investors primarily went for the following three types of investments: shares and mutual funds, long-term bonds, and short-term bonds.
The first one was up 11 per cent to reach MOP316.5 billion, while the latter two were up 8.2 per cent and 81.7 per cent – to MOP750.7 billion and MOP137.1 billion respectively.
Asian investments made up the biggest share of the pie, at about 44 per cent – followed by North America at 23 per cent, Europe at 17.6 per cent and North Atlantic and Caribbean at 11.4 per cent.
Mainland China alone remained in the top for investment, constituting 28.4 per cent of all overseas holdings – up 22.6 per cent year on year.
Investments in the United States also leaped by 33.6 per cent to over MOP250 billion.
However, money placed in neighbouring Hong Kong fell 7.3 per cent.
