US-China trade relations after the deadline: where next?

US-China trade relations after the deadline: where next?
Date: 6 March, 2019

Negotiators from the US and China are racing to reach a trade deal before the 1st March deadline agreed by the two countries at the G-20 summit in December 2018. Both sides have incentives to reach an agreement that will avert a scheduled hike in tariff rates that will have a negative economic impact. However, the political leaders from the two countries also need a deal they can sell domestically. The US president, Donald Trump, is looking for a “win” from his strategy of taking a tough approach towards China. Meanwhile, the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, does not want to be seen as surrendering China’s economic interests in the face of US pressure. This makes progress on the structural economic issues that divide the countries particularly difficult.

In this exclusive webinar, analysts from The Economist Intelligence Unit will digest the latest developments in the trade relationship soon after the March 1st deadline has passed. It will offer our views on how the relationship will develop – whether a deal has been secured or not. What will be the economic impact on both countries? What is the long-term outlook for the relationship? How could it impact on other countries?

Join on Wednesday 6th March 2019 at 2pm-3pm Greenwich Mean Time (9am-10am Eastern Standard Time) where this  webinar will dive into these questions and others, offering guidance to businesses and other organisations. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
