1.EU puts US talks on hold over tariffs

The EU’s top trade official warned the US on April 18 that she would not enter talks on easing commercial tension until Washington dropped any threat to hit Europe with punitive tariffs on steel and aluminium.

The move of Mr Trump on tariffs has exasperated Brussels, which has threatened retaliation if Europe is hit by the measures, and is preparing to challenge them at the World Trade Organization.

The EU had “not started to negotiate anything” with the US and would not do so until an “unconditional and permanent” exemption was granted when a temporary exemption from the 25 per cent tariff on steel and 10 per cent tariff on aluminium would extend beyond a May 1 deadline set by US president Donald Trump in March.

Washington has also threatened to hit more than 1000 Chinese products with import taxes in response to what it says is systematic intellectual property theft. Beijing has lined up retaliatory measures, sparking fears of a trade war.
