A three-day visit to Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) aims to carry out a local assessment of the performance of Forum Macau over its 15 years of existence and to gather inputs for future actions, said Yao Zhizhong, from the  Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Academy of Social Sciences of China.

The Academy, one of the main study centres and research institute of the Chinese government, was the entity chosen to carry out an external evaluation of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Forum Macau).

The mission, which is accompanied by the Cape Verdean representative at Forum Macau, Nuno Furtado, held a meeting on Thursday with the heads of investment promotion agency Cabo Verde Trade Invest, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.

Yao said that this visit, which will be repeated in all member countries of the Forum, Cabo Verde, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Brazil, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola and Sao Tome and Principe, is intended to collect contributions from the eight members in order to tailor the planning of the actions to the expectations of the countries.

Furtado said that 15 years after the Forum was founded, it is necessary to assess what has been done and what future prospects will be, “and establishing new cooperation strategies.”

Cape Verde Trade Invest president Ana Lima Barber said that the mission will help to understand how the economic and trade relationship with China can be improved and she stressed the need for Forum Macau to be more present and better known to entrepreneurs and institutions of the countries.

The mission will meet with organisations on the islands of Santiago and Sao Vicente, namely the chambers of commerce, associations of young entrepreneurs, as well as the general directorates of commerce, customs and foreign policy.

The mission of the World Economics and Politics of the Academy of Social Sciences of China will be in Portugal from 22 to 25 April, and a meeting will be held at the Casa de Macau Foundation on 24 April.
