Investment attracted with Golden Visas up 34,6% in June

The investment attracted through the “Golden” Visas has increased by 34,6% in June – when compared to the same month in the previous year – to 52,8 million euros, even though it has receded by 18,8% in the first half of the year, according to statistics from the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (lit. Service of Foreigners and Borders).

In June, the investment resulting from the Authorization of Residence for Investment Activities (ARI, according to the initials of the Portuguese term), another way of referring to the “Golden” Visas, has achieved 52 849 429,34 euros, an increase of 34,6%, when compared to the same month in 2017 (390 250 091,91 euros). Conversely, in May, the investment decreased by 28%.

Of the total sum attracted in June, most is from the purchase of real estate (49 751 115,83 euros), whereas the capital transfer went up to 3 098 313,51 euros.

In the past month, 90 ARI were granted, of which 87 were from the purchase of real estate. Of this total, four were granted through real estate for urban repair. To the end of June, there had been a total of 164 “Golden” Visas granted through real estate for urban repair, with the first being granted nearly two years ago (July of 2016). Capital transfer accounted for three Visas.

In the first semester, investment attracted through this tool totaled 484 029 198,98 euros, which represents a fall of 18,8% (596,4 million in the same period of 2017).

In cumulative terms – since the “Golden” Visas started being granted, 8th of October of 2012, up to last June – total investment attracted amounts to 3 895 295 041, of which 366 144 760,19 euros were through capital transfer and 3 529 150 281,18 euros were through real estate investment.

Since the creation of this method, which aims to attract investment, 6 369 ARI were granted: two in 2012, 494 in 2013, 1 526 in 2014, 766 in 2015, 1 414 in 2016, 1 351 in 2017 and 816 in 2018.

In cumulative terms, since its inception until June, 6 017 Visas have been granted through the acquisition of real estate, 341 through capital transfer, and 11 for the creation of, at least, 10 jobs. China tops the list of ARI granted (3 890 until June), followed by Brazil (561), South Africa (254), Turkey (224) and Russia (222).

The new rules for obtaining the “Golden” Visas, which expanded the criteria of investment for citizens outside the European Union to areas such as urban repair, science, among others, were instituted on the 3rd of September of 2015.

Since 2013, 10 793 residence authorizations have been granted to family members: 576 in 2013, 2 395 in 2014, 1 322 in 2015, 2 344 in 2016, 2 678 in 2017 and 1 478 in 2018.
