China has surpassed Japan and should keep increasing its importation of natural gas, especially after the oil pipeline transporting the product from Russia is finished.

China has surpassed Japan and is now the biggest importer of natural gas in the world, states Safety4Sea. According to the publication, in 2018, China has already imported 7,41 tons of natural gas, which translates to the equivalent to 34,9 million metric tons, against Japan’s 34,5 million metric tons.

The same publication states that the majority of Chinese gas importations were of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Of this total, 4,5 million tons of LNG were imported in May in sea tanks and 3,27 million tons by oil pipelines. Quoting the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the publication states that the importations of LNG reached 15,75 million tons, 58,3% more than in the same period of the previous year.

With the conclusion of the Natural Gas Oil Pipeline of the Eastern Route scheduled for the end of 2019, an increase in the Chinese importations of Russian natural gas has also been foreseen. Through that access, 25 billion cubic metres of natural gas from Russia should arrive to China.
